The legendary Galveston Flyaways club was a charter member in the ambitious Lone Star Colored Baseball League of Texas, formed in the gulf city in January, 1897. Lest anyone think the Flyaways club was a rag-tag outfit, consider that it was managed by none other than Bud Fowler, perhaps the biggest name in all of black baseball during the period. Fowler was, in fact, the first African-American professional player to compete in integrated baseball before the imposition of the color ban.
